Best of the Vancouver Winter Olympics

Now that the Olympic haze is starting to clear and I am going through post-event depression, it’s time for me to reminisce on my experiences, and widdle through over 38,000 images (over 100GBs!) shot during the course of 16 days. Most of this mind numbing edit was done each day following the event, but there is tons of stock and seconds that need to be edited with a fine toothed comb. With so many memorable shots by some of the world’s best photographers it is difficult to go through your limited view, as you can only be in one place at a time. With that said, I tried to make the best of each situation presented and this collection will hopefully be representative of that. So here are my Best of the Vancouver Olympics, I hope you enjoy, and as always your feedback and comments are much appreciated!

  1. Great work Donald!

  2. Chris Hanewinckel says:

Amazing…I almost forgot about some of those photos from early in the games. Thanks for taking the time to post a best of selection. I look forward to seeing what you do next. See you on the sidelines…whenever that may be. Do you shoot any Padres?

  3. Bill Coleman says:

Thanks for the invite to throw in my 2 cents. Loved most of the shots. Greatness that I look forward to seeing in your inspirational imagery. And I even got a laugh out of ‘Confortola #232’ being pulled under the barrier by unseen forces. On my old 19” CRT a couple of the shots, like ‘Shannon Bahrke w/flag’, look like the focus was off a bit. Curious if that’s the case and your overall satisfaction with Canon’s current autofocus. ‘Vera Bazarova is thrown’ made me wonder how similar shots with legs or arms out, or a more vertical blur with the shutter closing at the peak of a jump would look. ‘competitor leaving starting gate’ made me wish for an overhead shot with the course unfolding before them. Speaking of overhead, are you close enough to the action and allowed to use your monopod as a boom to get more perspective from above? Has Stephane Lambiel offered to buy the rights to that shot so he can bury it? 🙂 If I were Ivica Kostelic, I’d give about anything for a big ass print of that exquisitely intense shot. ‘Katarina Novotna’ is really beautiful and I love the way 2nd place has a razor sharp hand. Wondering if you’ve done shots of runners with stationary camera/long shutter where only feet on ground are sharp. Thanks for the speed skate close-up. I can’t believe the leading edge is such a sharp corner. In closing, a caption suggestion for first pic of ‘Akiko Suzuki’: “Akiko Suzuki grimaces as her foot breaks off during spin.”

    • Thanks for your 2 cents Bill, I appreciate it! The Shannon Bahrke with flag is actually tact sharp on her eye where it needs to be when you pull up the 45mg file shot with the Canon Mark IV. Unfortunately, the shots on my blog are less than 125k (450 pixels long side) so there is no way to really tell whether something is razor. And yes I was happy with the AF and sharpness of the new Canon Mark IV, which in my opinion was a great improvement over the problematic last generation, but the large file sizes and 10fps burns through CF cards at a ridiculous rate. In regards to overhead boom shot at the skiing start, I think it would be an impossibility because TV and FINA don’t want you anywhere near that start house during the races and there is not place to attach a remote and a boom/pole cam would just be in the way. I think the pans shots of runners feet would be out as they are never stationary as the hand of the skaters glide on the ice for long periods in short track. But that shouldn’t discourage someone from trying…

  4. Epic as always!

  5. Inspirational work sir, I’m blown away by your fore-thought to set up for some of these great shots. No better lesson in sports photography than right here.

    Cheers
    Paul

  6. A very good reportage. greetings

  7. WriterWriter says:

Gorgeous work. Love the luge track shot and the last shot of the Canadian flag on the black carpet. Great work.
